menstrual panties

FAQ : Your most frequently asked questions

The concept and technology

A menstrual panty is an undergarment that, thanks to an absorbent zone, acts as both lingerie and
hygienic protection! With our innovative technology, you no longer need to use tampons, menstrual cups, or
sanitary pads, our menstrual panties are sufficient on their own. However, nothing prevents you from using both at the same time
if you wish.

To learn more, don't hesitate to check out our page "The concept".

To be serene and to limit the number of machine washings during your cycle, we recommend that you have at least 3 pairs of period panties, including at least one model for heavy flows, "long-lasting" for the night.

Our ELIA period underwear is perfectly suited for the challenges of the three trimesters and for postpartum. Our Louison biker short is specifically designed for postpartum.

Find out how our products can support you here.

Our period panties are slightly thicker than regular lingerie, because of the absorbent and waterproof zone inserted between the two cotton layers. However, they are not as thick as conventional sanitary pads, making them a very comfortable and pleasant undergarment to wear. Our thin seams also makes them invisible under jeans, so you'll quickly forget that you're
wearing period panties. Please note that the more absorbent the model, the thicker it is.

Learn more about our absorbent technology to better understand how our different fabric thicknesses work.

All our menstrual underwear can be worn for up to 12 hours depending on your flow. Our panties absorb the equivalent of 4 tampons for our most absorbent models (our shorties, boxers and biker short).

The Choupette tanga is for light flows, the Félicie and Philomène panties for medium flows, the Armande shorty and the Simone high-waisted briefs are more suitable for heavy flows and/or at night, while our Louison biker short is specially designed for hemorrhagic flows such as post partum or flows related to the wearing of a copper IUD for example.

Our eucalyptus fiber absorbent zone has anti-bacterial and anti-moisture properties: it allows you to stay dry all day long and prevents bacteria from developing. No risk of toxic shock syndrome with our lingerie. Our lingerie is therefore not only hygienic, but also one of the best solutions for your body and your heath.

With our eucalyptus fiber absorbent zone, there are no bad odours: it has anti-bacterial properties and provides a fresh feeling to neutralize odours.

However, we recommend that you rinse it in cold water after wearing it, and put it in the washing machine quickly: any garment that stays wet for too long can develop a damp smell.

If bad odours persist, you can always use a few drops of essential oils when putting it in the machine, but if you follow our care instructions, this should not be necessary.

Our menstrual panties are made to be worn up to 12 hours (different models depending on your flow). If you choose the right
model, there is no risk of unexpected leaks thanks to our absorbent zone doubled with a waterproof lining.

However, if your flow is very heavy or if you are worried about leaks, you can also use conventional sanitary pads with your period panties, but this is not compulsory.

The ideal is to see for yourself and to test our menstrual lingerie at home on a heavy flow day.

Our cotton is 100% organic as indicated on our site, but not only! Our menstrual lingerie is also labeled GOTS, Origine France Garantie and Oeko-Tex, all the advantages of each one of our labels remain in line with our values:

The Oeko-Tex label is not a guarantee of organic but it guarantees the harmlessness of the product towards the body, meaning that the solvents used for the treatment of our materials are not harmful for humans. This certification is not an indicator of the organic or natural character of the
fiber (our PUL is a synthetic material, but it is labeled Oeko-Tex).

On the other hand, the organic label offers us a guarantee of the environmental impact of the cultivation of our organic cotton, which limits the use of chemicals and whose absence already preserves the health of all the men and women who work in the harvest.

The GOTS certification, in addition to the qualities of the organic, comes to complete our requirements with a guarantee of respect, at least
of improvement, of the working conditions of the people who work on the supply chain of our materials.

Finally, the OFG label, Origine France Garantie, is a guarantee of our desire to work locally, with the majority of our manufacturing operations being carried out in our French workshop (design & pattern making, weaving and dyeing of cotton, assembly, sewing, packaging...).

Some women have a very central flow, which accumulates in the centre of the panty, the narrowest area, causing it to overflow quickly, while
the rest of the absorbent zone is far from being saturated. Those whose flow direction is forward or backwards generally benefit from a longer wearing time before the saturation of the absorbent zone!

This is by no means inevitable, as it is possible to use inter-labial petals to redirect the flow and thus have a better distribution of bleeding.

Our products

We offer two product lines: adult and teen. We have established a size guide on each article page. We invite you to go to each product page, and click on "Choose my size", just below "add to cart".

Please note that each product size is different, so we advise you to check each item sheet before validating your cart.

Moreover, with the different washes, it is possible that our lingerie slightly loosens up, so if your panties are slightly tight when you receive them, don't panic, with the washes, it will be fine.

It is important, in order not to make mistakes, to take your measurements in the right place.

The exact place to take your measurements is at the widest point of the pelvis, without considering the "saddlebags" which are normally found a little lower.

This can happen; we are sorry. Don't worry because it never lasts too long.

If the out-of-stock condition concerns one of our models in the permanent collection (Choupette, Philomène, Félicie, Armande, Simone or Louison), we invite you to activate the alerts directly on our e-shop. Usually, a few days later, you will receive a notification that the product is back in stock.

If the shortage concerns a limited edition, unfortunately, the product will no longer be available. Indeed, to limit waste, we do
what is called upcycling: we use our cotton scraps to create limited editions, which usually sell
very quickly, so we invite you not to wait for a long time if you wish to purchase one of our limited edition models.

Our period panties are exclusively sold on our website. Don’t hesitate to contact our customer service for advice on the choice of model or size.

Our prices

At Elia, we have chosen to opt for a 100% French production, valuing all the links of our
supply chain: from the cotton manufacturer to the seamstress who will make your panties or the order packer.

Sales and fast fashion often result in the overproduction of textile products, at the cost of a disastrous ecological footprint and waste of polluting raw materials during manufacturing. So at Elia, we prefer to produce exactly the quantities we need, with natural and high-quality raw materials. Our pricing policy is to offer you the best quality at the right price. We have chosen to produce everything in France to ensure traceability and maximum quality for our underwear, with no compromise.

With our sponsorship and loyalty program, you can, however, benefit from advantages that enable you to purchase our pretty lingerie at a lower price.

Absolutely! If you're using disposable pads, that's a lot of money and waste for every cycle. In the long run, period panties are more economical. But beyond the cost savings you make with
menstrual lingerie, using period panties is above all a commitment to the planet (zero waste, fewer pollutants...) and the body
(100% organic cotton, no risk of toxic shock syndrome...).

Lifespan and maintenance

All our models can be worn up to 12 hours depending on your flow (we do not recommend wearing your lingerie for more than 12 hours for hygiene reasons, as for classic lingerie)

The Choupette thong is for light flows, the Félicie and Philomène panties for medium flows, the Armande shorty and the Simone high-waisted briefs are
more adapted for heavy flows and/or at night, while our Louison biker short is specially designed for hemorrhagic flows such as postpartum or flows linked to the wearing of a copper IUD, for example.

You can also wear our lingerie in addition to classic sanitary protection if you are afraid of leaks.

Initially designed to be worn during your period, Elia lingerie is also very suitable for the following times:
- During your period, day and night
- With or without additional sanitary protection
- Before your period, if you are not sure when it will come and to feel safe in case of surprises
- When practising sports
- For light urine leaks
- For white discharge
- After your delivery once you are back home, for post-partum bleeding, and to avoid the risks of irritation due to traditional protections
- During your pregnancy, for the small inconveniences which might arise, in particular during the last trimester

And of course, as classic lingerie at any time of the month.

If you take care of it, Elia menstrual lingerie has the same lifespan as classic lingerie: 5 to 7 years!

To learn more about our care tips, go here.

In order to keep your lingerie as long as possible, we advise you to follow our care instructions:

- Rinse your panties in cold water until the water is clear, as soon as you have finished wearing it
- Wring it out gently before putting it in the machine as soon as possible
- Machine wash: at a low temperature (40°C maximum), with a glycerine-free detergent (avoid fabric softeners and other softeners, which are often very "greasy", and opt instead for white vinegar to soften your laundry)
- Air dry

For more information and advice on how to wash your Elia menstrual underwear, visit this page.

Hand washing is possible, of course, but we recommend it exceptionally. Indeed, a hand wash is
finally more aggressive for the fabric than a machine wash (we rub more, we wring out by twisting the panties in all directions, etc...)
which, in the long run, damages and wears out your lingerie.

We prefer to recommend a hand wash during the cycle if you wish, and a machine wash at the end of each
cycle.

You can find our care tips right here.

It can happen: it is indeed a phenomenon of discolouration that can occur when some of us have acid, vaginal secretions
. This discolours the cotton but does not affect the proper functioning of the panties.

To minimize this, rinse them in cold water without soap as soon as possible after wearing them! And then put them in the washing machine. Still, it's just a cosmetic issue!

It is a problem that is specific to all black panties (menstrual or not) because it depends on our acidity (white discharge like blood), which can vary and be more or less important during the same cycle.

A lighter coloured absorbent panty could have red bloodstains after washing, which is why we chose black.

This does not spare organic cotton and Oeko-tex certified fabrics and is in no way a sign of poor quality materials. Once again, there is no need to worry. It does not hinder the effectiveness of our products!

In general, we advise you to change your underwear more regularly and to rinse it quickly after wearing it if you don't want to alter the aesthetics of your panties.

We strongly advise you to use a hypoallergenic and glycerin-free detergent for your lingerie, and in general, for all clothes worn close to the body. We also offer a menstrual detergent for
period panties.

To soften your clothes, do not use fabric softener: if your water is hard and chalky, prefer white vinegar, which has anti-chalk properties and helps fight against the dryness of clothes after washing. It also neutralizes bad adours. Avoid using chemical and perfumed products from the market, which are not recommended for any garment worn close to the body!

Glycerine will eventually clog the absorbent fibres of your period panties and "waterproof" them in the long run: liquids may bead up on the surface, which will make them less effective!

For example, be careful with the composition of Marseille Soap: the original recipe only indicates a tiny amount of glycerin from the natural saponification process.

For the same reasons, we do not recommend the use of fabric softener because these are greasy compositions made to limit static electricity and soften the laundry but which reduce the efficiency of absorption and clog the machines in the long run! Moreover, you should not use them on all absorbent household linen such as towels... as well as sportswear and period panties!

If your lingerie has been washed at more than 40° or has been accidentally put in the dryer, no need to worry!

However, we recommend washing at a low temperature for the following reasons:

The absorbent zone made of eucalyptus fibres tends to shrink slightly under the effect of heat. It's still as absorbent as ever, but you may notice that the cotton on top wrinkles under the effect of the slightly shrunken absorbent layer. It's just less aesthetic!

Blood "cooks" at high temperatures, so stains are harder to get out once you have washed them: that's why it's best to do a manual rinse in cold water first. However, the inside of our panties is all in black to avoid unsightly stains.

The life span of your panties (and that of classic lingerie) is reduced with high-temperature washing, so it is better to avoid it!

Environment and eco-responsibility

We try to choose our fabrics in an environmentally friendly way. To learn more about the different materials used for our lingerie and the absorbent zone, discover our technology in more detail. To learn more about our eco-responsible actions, click here.

At Elia, we don't use any material made from animal fibres: our absorbent zone is made of wood fibre textile, and the fabric of our panties is made of cotton. In addition, our menstrual stain remover is vegan and made without beef gall.

Absolutely, all our panties are Oeko-tex certified and our cotton is certified organic, to guarantee your well-being.

Our Elia lingerie is made in our workshops in France, from design to delivery, including cotton weaving. Whenever possible, we favor short circuits for our supplies and our partners.

All our lingerie models are made of our organic cotton (to which we add between 3% and 5% of elastane for more comfort and flexibility), an absorbent fabric made of eucalyptus fibres (eucalyptus Tencel) and a waterproof fabric made of breathable PUL.

France is just starting to produce organic cotton. We are planning to source on our local market in the future, but today the volumes are insufficient. The world organic cotton production concentrates in the United States, India and Egypt, but this list is not exhaustive (Turkey and China also complete the list). Our partners' supply for the raw cotton yarn is variable throughout the year, depending on the harvest.

Our organic cotton is then entirely woven in our workshop in France, our waterproof fabric comes from European suppliers, while our absorbent fabric is from an Austrian production.
